Dr. Elsey's Ultra is an unscented natural clay litter that blends heavy granules with medium grain clay. The maker says it has no perfumes or deodorants and can be used in sifting or mechanical boxes. It lists a 3 to 4 inch depth and scooping twice daily, with waste going in the trash, not the toilet. Activated carbon granules, sold in bags. Our suggestion for most homes is the 120g bag. Sprinkle two tablespoons over fresh litter and mix gently, then add more when the box starts to smell again. No fixed schedule applies. [6]

How clumping litter is made

Clumping litter is meant to form lumps you can lift out, and the makers here name what they start from. Dr. Elsey's lists natural clay, Boxie lists bentonite clay, World's Best lists whole-kernel corn, and the wood litter lists natural wood fiber. None of the pages we read explains its clumping method, so this page does not either.

[1][2][3][4]

Clay, corn and wood-fiber formulas

Two clays, one corn and one wood-fiber litter cover the clay and plant-based groups. None of these is sold as a lightweight formula, so if weight matters to you, read the bag weight on the maker page before you order.

[1][2][3][4]

Scooping habits that matter

Cornell's tips advise daily removal of clumps and feces, and Dr. Elsey's directs scooping twice daily with a fill of 3 to 4 inches. Those are habits, not proven results. Editorially, the routine you can keep matters more than which bag looks best.

Label details worth checking

[2][3][4][1][6]
  • Material: bentonite clay, whole-kernel corn or natural wood fiber.
  • Scent: Boxie's Unscented line, World's Best's formula with no added scent, and a wood litter that smells of wood.
  • Dust and tracking: the percentages are each maker's own wording and are not on a shared scale.
  • Additives: probiotics are named, but their strain and amount are not.

How we compare

These are desk comparisons. We read what the makers publish, set the products side by side and pick by fit. We have not tested the products ourselves, so the pages report no measured results, no lab figures and no numerical ratings. Every comparison lists its sources.
