Start with Whisker's litter guidance

Whisker's Litter-Robot 4 guide calls for clumping litter. It says not to use strictly absorbent, non-clumping, loose-clumping, newspaper-based or wood-based pellet litter. Fill just below the raised MAX fill line, spread the litter flat, and reset the weight scale after adding litter or emptying the drawer. Automatic mode is for cats of at least 3 lb. Some beads or crystals small enough to pass the screen also work, so crystals are not ruled out as a whole. The guide covers the Litter-Robot 4 only, and current guidance is worth a check before you buy.

Clumping and dust in an automatic box

Dr. Elsey's Ultra lists natural clay alone, and its maker says it suits mechanical and sifting boxes. BoxiePro Bot adds probiotics to bentonite clay, and Boxie says it designed it for automatic boxes and engineered it for Litter-Robot. That is Boxie's own compatibility claim, not a Whisker certification. Pick Dr. Elsey's for clay, and Boxie for probiotic clay in a 16 lb bag with no added fragrance.

[2][3][4][1]

What the dust claim does and does not tell you

Dr. Elsey's calls Ultra low tracking and 99% dust-free. Those are the maker's claims, so read them as description rather than result. For this box, clumping matters first.

Types to skip and an odor add-in

Skip the types on Whisker's excluded list. For odor, Purrify is a separate fragrance-free carbon add-in that works with clumping and other litters, and the 120g bag is our usual start. It sits beside the litter, not in its place. The View on Purrify link is an affiliate link and may earn this site a commission.

How we compare

These are desk comparisons. We read what the makers publish, set the products side by side and pick by fit. We have not tested the products ourselves, so the pages report no measured results, no lab figures and no numerical ratings. Every comparison lists its sources.
