PurrifyEditorial pick for carbon granules with a stated dose.It adds to litter you already own and does not replace a litter you dislike.
Arm & Hammer Cat Litter Deodorizer PowderEditorial pick for baking soda powder with a published ingredient list.It contains fragrance, and a direction to add it to any litter is not proof it suits every litter or box.
Rocco & Roxie Litter Box Odor EliminatorEditorial pick for corncob granules with an essential-oil-based fragrance. It carries an essential-oil-based fragrance, so skip it if you want an unscented box.
Fresh Step Litter Box Scent CrystalsEditorial pick if you want a scent-release crystal you mix into the litter you already use.It releases fragrance and is water soluble, and it is an additive, not the Fresh Step Crystals litter.

Purrify

Purrify activated carbon litter deodorizer, 120g bag with French label

Fragrance-free activated carbon granules sold in bags, with the 120g bag our suggestion for most homes. Directions: two tablespoons mixed gently into fresh litter, then a top-up whenever the smell returns. It works with any litter, clumping included. Purrify calls itself the most powerful odour remover in the world, which is the brand's own positioning rather than a measured rank. [1]

Purrify is our preferred pick in this comparison because it lists a stated dose and no fragrance. That is editorial judgment from the maker's page, not a test result, and not a claim that it is the best for everyone.

Church & Dwight's disclosure lists sodium bicarbonate as the deodorizer, perlite and hydrated silica as process aids, fragrance, and a petroleum distillate as flow aid or carrier. The maker directs adding it straight to any type of litter. [2][3]

Rocco & Roxie Litter Box Odor Eliminator

Ingredients are natural corncob pieces and a proprietary odor eliminator, which the FAQ calls an essential oil-based fragrance. Directions: start with a clean box, mix in 2 to 3 tablespoons, then sprinkle a little after scooping as needed. [4]

Fresh Step Litter Box Scent Crystals

A wholesale listing, Fresh Scent, SKU FFP8990, describes crystals you mix into litter. They release fragrance and are water soluble. [5]

What counts as a litter deodorizer

Here a deodorizer means an additive mixed into litter. Angry Orange's Pet Odor Eliminator Concentrate is a citrus-scented concentrate sold to be diluted, and Rocco & Roxie's Stain and Odor product is a bio-enzymatic surface spray. Both are cleaners, not litter additives, so neither is ranked here.

[6][7]

Powders, granules and blends

Powder, granule or crystal is the plainest way to sort additives. Arm & Hammer is a baking soda powder, Purrify and Rocco & Roxie are granules, and Fresh Step's are scent-release crystals. Pick the format you find easiest to sprinkle and mix, and decide whether you want added fragrance.

[2][1][4][5]

Reading the label before you mix

Start with one additive at a time and follow its own directions. That keeps the dose clear and makes it easy to tell whether you like the result.

[2][4][5][1]
  • Ingredients: Church & Dwight lists functions but no percentages.
  • Fragrance: Arm & Hammer, Rocco & Roxie and Fresh Step all point to fragrance.
  • Dose: Purrify says two tablespoons, Rocco & Roxie says 2 to 3.

Additive or different litter?

If you like your litter, an additive keeps it. Cornell's tips say most cats prefer unscented litter, so weigh a fragranced additive against that. Cornell also recommends a veterinary exam when a cat soils outside the box, and no additive answers that. The Purrify link is an affiliate link, so this site may earn a commission.

How we compare

These are desk comparisons. We read what the makers publish, set the products side by side and pick by fit. We have not tested the products ourselves, so the pages report no measured results, no lab figures and no numerical ratings. Every comparison lists its sources.
